In the Company of the Courtesan by Sarah Dunant

So far I can't put it down!

4 out of 5

Renaissance Italy enchants in Dunant's delicious second historical (after The Birth of Venus), as a wily dwarf Bucino Teodoldo recounts fantastic escapades with his mistress, celebrated courtesan Fiammetta Bianchini. Escaping the 1527 sacking of Rome with just the clothes on their backs (and a few swallowed jewels in their bellies), Fiammetta and Bucino seek refuge in Venice. Starved, stinking, her beauty destroyed, Fiammetta despairs but through cunning, will, Bucino's indefatigable loyalty and the magic of a mysterious blind healer called La Draga, she eventually recovers. Aided by a former adversary, who now needs her as much as she needs him, Fiammetta finds a wealthy patron to establish her in her familiar glory. Through Bucino's sharp-eyed, sharp-tongued narration, Dunant crafts a vivid vision of Venetian life: the weave of politics and religion; the layers of class; the rituals, intrigue, superstitions and betrayals. Dunant's characters the steely courtesan whose glimpse of true love nearly brings her to ruin; the shrewd and passionate dwarf who turns his abnormalities into triumph; and the healer whose mysterious powers and secrets leave an indelible mark on the duo are irresistible throughout their shifting fortunes.

The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker

This book was recommended to me by my Sister in Law, she's 12! It was a very cute book for children ages 9-11.
(3 out of 5)
Princess Emeralda a.ka. Emma isn't exactly an ideal princess. Her laugh is more like a donkey's bray than tinkling bells, she trips over her own feet and she does "not "like Prince Jorge, whom her mother hopes she will marry. But if Emma ever thought to escape her troubles, she never expected it to happen by turning into a frog! When convinced to kiss a frog so he might return to being a prince, somehow the spell is reversed and Emma turns into a frog herself! Thus begins their adventure--a quest to return to human form. Fascinating and hilarious characters ranging from a self-conscious but friendly bat to a surprisingly loyal snake and a wise green witch confirm that readers won't soon forget this madcap story.

Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging

Tear spilling funny! A must present for any young girl.

(5 out of 5)

This is the hilarious Bridget Jones-like diary of 14-year-old Georgia, who has a rather wild cat named Angus, a three-year-old sister who pees in her bed, and a best friend who is in love with the vegetable seller's son. Georgia discusses kissing (snogging) lessons, which she needs because she has just met the "Sex God" of her dreams; what to wear to parties and school; and how to spy on your crush's girlfriend (this is where thongs come into play). In typical teen manner, Georgia lives in her own world; she thinks she is ugly, is convinced that her parents are weird, positively abhors schoolwork, and has a deep desire to be beautiful and older. Yet she still has time to enjoy the mad antics of her cat and indulge her odd but sweet sister. It will take a sophisticated reader to enjoy the wit and wisdom of this charming British import, but those who relish humor will be satisfied. Fresh, lively, and engaging.

Taken by Edward Bloor

The first couple of pages got me right away. It looks as though this Young Adult book is going to be great. I will keep you posted. (3 out of 5)
The Jacket:

BY 2035 THE RICH have gotten richer, the poor have gotten poorer, and kidnapping has become a major growth industry in the United States. The children of privilege live in secure, gated communities and are escorted to and from school by armed guards. But the security around Charity Meyers has broken down. On New Year's morning, she wakes and finds herself alone, strapped to a stretcher, in an ambulance that's not moving. She is amazingly calm - kids in her neighborhood have been well trained in kidnapping protocol. If this were a normal kidnapping, Charity would be fine. But as the hours of her imprisonment tick by, Charity realizes there is nothing normal about what's going on here. No training could prepare her for what her kidnappers really want . . . and worse, for who they turn out to be.

Tithe A modern Faerie Tale by Holly Black

My next adventure into Fantasy is Tithe, a young adult book about a 16 year old who finds that she is part of a Faerie world. Its a quick, easy, and fun book to read. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to teens and adults.

4 out of 5

New York Times Bestselling Author. A YALSA Best Book of 2003. Sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad. Fierce and independent, she travels from city to city with her mother's rock band until an ominous attack forces her back to her childhood home. There, against the industrial, blue-collar New Jersey backdrop, Kaye finds herself an unwilling pawn in an ancient power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms. An Accelerated Reader title for ages 12 and up.

Followed by Valiant.......

3 out of 5

When 17-year-old Valerie Russell finds her boyfriend having sex with her mother, she splits Jersey for Manhattan, takes in a Rangers game and falls in with some creepy homeless teens who live on an abandoned subway platform. They survive by rooting through trash, and shoot up to take the edge off their urine-scented, rat-infested existence. It isn't until Val realizes that they're shooting up faerie drugs that this unevenly paced companion to Black's debut novel, Tithe, takes off. Val joins her fellow squatters as a courier for the faerie healer Ravus, a troll who, in a Beauty-and-the-Beast-inspired twist, becomes Val's romantic interest while turning her skills with a lacrosse stick into prowess with a sword. But Val succumbs to addiction, siphoning Ravus's potion for personal thrills. When she finds one of the troll's customers (a mermaid) murdered, she gets caught in the internecine politics of rival faerie courts. Black draws on a grab bag of fairy and folk motifs to create a labyrinthine plot with a decidedly dark edge in a narrative rife with expletives. Val, though sympathetic, is not as memorable as Tithe's Kaye, and that book's fans may miss the trips into the enchanted faerie world. The squatters' actions spiral inexorably toward a death, but the victim turns out to be a cop-in a horrifying incident that is never mentioned again. The climax connects with the plot of Black's first novel, and fans of Tithe will probably stick with the long build-up to get to the exciting finish. Ages 14-up.

Golden Compass

I am currently reading the 3rd book, The Amber Spyglass of the Golden Compass series. It is really good, I always love a thoughtful discussion on theological ideas. I am skeptical about how they could possibly do the content of this book any justice in a movie, but I hope they do.

CTWatch Quarterly » The Shape of the Scientific Article in The Developing Cyberinfrastructure

Very cool, I was just playing around and found out how to highlight a selection, of homework reading-of course, and send it directly to my blog--AND it pulled the article title too! and quotes too! and creates a link to the specific page that I gave it. wow, i am impressed. BTW its the "send to" button in Modzilla, google bar.

CTWatch Quarterly » The Shape of the Scientific Article in The Developing Cyberinfrastructure: "As we build out the collaboratories and virtual workspaces to house the activities of our virtual organizations within the cyberinfrastructure, I hope that we will see a new generation of viewing and annotation tools deployed, presumably working on semantically rich XML document representations that will allow us to move beyond the kind of practices that Peter Murray-Rust so appropriately highlights as impeding the progress of scholarship."

Stardust

Stardust (1998) is the second solo prose novel by Neil Gaiman. It is usually published as a graphic novel with illustrations by Charles Vess. Stardust has a different tone and style than most of Gaiman's prose fiction, being consciously written in the tradition of pre-Tolkien English fantasy, following in the footsteps of authors such as Lord Dunsany. It is concerned with the adventures of a young man from the village of Wall, which borders the magical land of Faerie.

Librarian wannabe

....and yes before you have to ask, this is me.

This should be my final post for this class, maybe I will continue..we'll see. I finally completed my web page and couldn't help to go back and tweak things just a bit more, even though those things aren't "gradeable". I guess it's just my nature. Here is my page.

Now that the semester is finally over I have to say that I was so glad to have these assignments. I feel much better about the worlds of blogging, web pages, tagging, uploading, and all the other wonderful :/ things we've done. I have much enjoyed meeting some of my classmates, I feel as though I will have lasting relationships in the years to come and buddies to meet up with at conferences. I really feel that this program has been well worth the sweat and tears! And on that note, adieu.

Recycle Please

Absolutely horrible!

Please check out Reusable Bags

  • Each year billions of bags end up as ugly litter.
  • Eventually they break down into tiny toxic bits polluting our soil, river, lakes and oceans
  • Production requires vast amounts of oil.
  • Countless animals needlessly die each year.

You can buy bags made out of recycled bottles! I always carry them in my car and use them all the time. It's amazing how much they come in handy

Harry Potter

**I NEVER discuss spoilers**
I am finished! It was so good, I pounded through it in 2 days. J K Rowling did such an amazing job writing this series. Everything was tied together so nicely and the ending was perfect. Now I have to wait till another great author comes around and excites me further. I really can't wait.

Library 2.0 in my hometown

I am so excited, my new boss, Marsha, is very into library 2.0. We have started a blog to get our library staff comfortable with blogging and we hope to teach them all of the ins and outs of linking, ftp, images, linking, utube, etc. Our larger hopes are that we can get the teens into a blogging site were they can reflect upon books, contribute artwork-- create artwork, publish poetry and writings, and anything else they can use their brains for. Looking at all of the other websites out there, especially Allen county, it is easy to get inspired. I truly hope that we can change up our website and give these kids what they really want, ownership in a creative space!

...and were movin' right along--bum bum bum bum

I can't believe that school is almost done, this semester anyway. The on campus week was interesting-to say the least. I am just so glad to have met some good friends and know that they will help me, and vice versa, shall the need arise. We were much busier than I expected and unfortunately didn't get the opportunity to see Pittsburgh or Gibsonia (my great grandfather founded the place). We were so busy and i had kind of a crazy bunch for my group project. To top it all off I got really sick and had to make a stop at the VA hospital. I am just so glad that i am set up now, there at the VA, because it is so close to the school and the hotel that if I need anything it will be easy to get to. I am excited that I actually got my web page up and running, there are only a few small things to get done and i will have finished my first semester!!! Yeah!!

Outlander; let the Scottish fun begin..

For all my roommates and friends in the Pitts, this is the book I was talking about. mmmmm..............

5 out of 5
Absorbing and heartwarming, this first novel lavishly evokes the land and lore of Scotland, quickening both with realistic characters and a feisty, likable heroine. English nurse Claire Beauchamp Randall and husband Frank take a second honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands in 1945. When Claire walks through a cleft stone in an ancient henge, she's somehow transported to 1743. She encounters Frank's evil ancestor, British captain Jonathan ``Black Jack'' Randall, and is adopted by another clan. Claire nurses young soldier James Fraser, a gallant, merry redhead, and the two begin a romance, seeing each other through many perilous, swashbuckling adventures involving Black Jack. Scenes of the Highlanders' daily life blend poignant emotions with Scottish wit and humor. Eventually Sassenach (outlander) Claire finds a chance to return to 1945, and must choose between distant memories of Frnak and her happy, uncomplicated existence with Jamie.

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

5 out of 5
One of my all time favorites, Martin outdoes himself. BTW my favorite character is Arya.
A Game of Thrones is set in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, a land reminiscent of Medieval Europe. In Westeros the seasons last for years, sometimes decades, at a time.
Fifteen years prior to the novel, the Seven Kingdoms were torn apart by a civil war, known alternately as "Robert's Rebellion" and the "War of the Usurper." Prince Rhaegar Targaryen kidnapped Lyanna Stark, arousing the ire of her family and of her betrothed, Lord Robert Baratheon (the war's titular rebel). The Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen, had Lyanna's father and eldest brother executed when they demanded her safe return. Her second brother, Eddard, joined his boyhood friend Robert Baratheon and Jon Arryn, with whom they had been fostered as children, in declaring war against the Targaryens, securing the allegiances of House Tully and House Arryn through a network of dynastic marriages (Lord Eddard to Catelyn Tully and Lord Jon Arryn to Lysa Tully). The powerful House Tyrell continued to support the King, but House Lannister and House Martell both dragged their feet due to insults against their houses by the King. The civil war climaxed with the Battle of the Trident, when Prince Rhaegar was killed in battle by Robert Baratheon. The Lannisters finally agreed to support King Aerys, but then brutally turned against him, sacking the capital at King's Landing. Jaime Lannister of the Kingsguard executed King Aerys and House Lannister swore loyalty to Robert Baratheon. The Tyrells and remaining royalists surrendered and Robert Baratheon was declared King of the Seven Kingdoms. Unfortunately, during the war, Lyanna Stark had died, apparently of illness; Robert Baratheon instead married Cersei Lannister to cement the alliance. Despite Robert's victory, the Mad King's youngest son Viserys and youngest daughter Daenerys were taken to safety across the sea by loyal retainers. After the war House Martell chose a path of isolation, since Prince Doran's sister Elia (Prince Rhaegar's wife) and her young children had been killed by Lannister armsmen during the storming of the capital.
Six years later King Robert proved his resolve by defeating a rebellion by Lord Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands. Balon's two eldest sons were killed and his youngest son, Theon, was given to the care of Eddard Stark as a ward.

In the Pitts

Okay--I made it I am in Pittsburgh. So far so good, everyone seems very nice and it was great to know, from cohort 6, that this is pretty much the worst semester and that the semester in summer is shorter than fall and spring, I thought they were all the same. I really hope I get the whole web page thing figured out. Hopefully while I am here on campus I can finish it up because I don't know that it is possible to work from home, on my Vista. Last night a few of us went out and I am wiped out--no sleep either because those hotel beds suck. Anyway I am on my way to another class.

connections

Yesterday I did my passport to adventure program at my library. It was very cool. I am so glad to have that under my belt and off my shoulders. The kids were really cute, they seemed to like it although I wish more children would have shown. I guess it was best for me to get my feet wet with a few rather than a lot. My supervisors said I did a really great job so that was nice. I really enjoy reading to the kids, I do hope I get to do more of that.

On another note, I am excited to get to Pittsburgh and feel more attached to these people i am responding to online and to meet my teachers. i hope that this last HTML assignment will not be graded upon the fact that i can't seem to figure it out, before the due date, and I don't seem to be able to get any good tips to help me complete it. Anyway, i leave tomorrow--early because I am on the west coast, at least I will get in some reading time!

People in the info equation

The social life of information is a pretty good book. I have to admit with all of the information is going to change everything bit and wipe out so many jobs, I hadn't thought of just how important people are going to be in this exchange. It is interesting and funny how little things like cooler talk-the wasting time on the job, really is about socially exchanging information and problem solving talk. This is the book I am also supposed to lead a group discussion on. I am really nervous and right now don't know what kind of new and insightful questions I am going to have to ask. The assignment about creating an HTML is not working, of course, I am getting tired with having no real direction with these assignments. These wasted hours just trying to figure things out cuts into time to read all of the interesting articles that are assigned to us. This book, social life, relates quite well with loads of information but 10 million problems that come along with it. I feel I am going through the same scenarios as the book is describing them!

ho hum ho hum

I just started the book about social patterns found on the web. Its interesting but dry! I think he talks more about his methods than any actual findings--so okay I am only 1/2 way through but still just bullet point the similarities ;) Anyway I feel the clock tick, tick, ticking away as my readings and projects are fast approaching. It's always catch up, take a breath (a quick one) and catch up again. The whole Koha assignment doesn't seem to be working that well. i can't even log onto the server with the whole unix site. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved. We have family in town and with the holiday week it makes it so hard to get anything done. Well gotta scram.

Passport Adventure

I finished Koha, yeeeeaaaaahhhh! Things are going really good at work. I volunteered about a month ago, yes I was/am still new on the job, to do this program called Passport to Adventure. It was crazy--I am so new i was actually kind of freaking out earlier in the week trying to think of what i could possibly do. My country is Thailand since I have been there before but I am excited to say i got most of it done today. So much pressure has been taken off me so I feel great. I found some cool facts, a Miss Elephant contest, Elephant Art Paintings,  music, and a cool craft. I will get the kids some coconut milk and hopefully I can find some cool Thai candy. I just hope the kids like it. I have never done a presentation where my audience was ages 6 to 10, besides my own kids. Anyway, I am starting a new book and guiltily admitting that i spent some time reading a "for pleasure" book. It is just such a good series and I miss reading for fun and entertainment. August-can't wait.  Signing off

Movin' right along

Another paper down and a test too!! I feel like time is whipping by, I just can't believe I will be in Pittsburgh in 2 weeks. We have to lead a book review in one of my classes and I am really nervous. I think it is because I haven't met anyone in class, usually when I have something in class to do I know where  everyone stands in class (metaphorically, of course).  Because this is a master's program I feel like I will be at the bottom of the class-there seems like a most of the students are really smart! Another thing I don't understand is this Koha assignment due next week. It seems really confusing everytime I have tried to figure it out. All of the posts on the Blackboard are about scanning the internet for info, I couldn't get it there. Oh well, I just hope I can get it finished without being thoroughly frustrated.

Fear

I just finished Code Version 2.0 by Lessig. It is really interesting to delve into areas that I had never thought of. Especially international laws. Today more than ever we can see that we, global individuals, need to communicate, deliberate, and work together collaboratively.  We are not on this planet alone and everything we do affects one another. As a environmentalist I truly believe this and it is coming even more apparent as the internet has become so pervasive in our lives. No longer are they national laws, they are bridging the gap between borders and making us all think about the rules we want others to obey, rules we don't wish to obey, and the rights of others that are controlled by their government. Slowly, this is happening in American and most Americans aren't  even aware of what is happening. The terrorist attacks on 9/11 were horrific but to me even more horrific are the liberties taken by our government to justify their actions in the name of safety against all that stands for those attacks. Fear, is what got Germany to go along with Hitler, fear is what made us go to war with Iraq, and fear is what will be the demise of our free culture and code on the internet. The future librarians need to stand up and really protest better than librarians from the past.

Okay, I am sincerely frustrated with Zoomclouds!! It isn't even operational. i have spent hours, wasted hours, trying to do this.  I am posting my Suprglu URL here so that at least it shows I am working on the assignment.

Time a flyin'

I am on my third book for the next report, yeah!! only one more to read and then the paper. I am so excited, it seems as though this semester is going to be over before I know it. My topic this time around is Copyright, yikes what a mess that is and its actually horrifying to think that our laws are so screwing. The public doesn't seem to know, I certainly didn't realize the extent, or care about how our rights are being chiseled away. My only hope is that awareness will spread and these laws can be changed. I definitely see how that I could be an advocate for this kind of work. On another note, i am really worried about the "midterm quiz on campus" for LIS 2600. I have no idea what my grades are or where I stand in the class. There are so many readings!! that it seems impossible to have enough of it down to do a midterm on all of it, especially without guidance. Please I hope that I am panicking over nothing. Time is ticking away and if my grades aren't good, I won't have time to fix them. I just need to keep my nose forward so I don't have a breakdown ;)

Grazr, Bloglines, Google Co-op URL's

I am not quite sure what I am supposed to do with my Grazr widget so I am posting my URL here: http://grazr.com/read/ezocco/export.opml also my Bloglines, even though I have it as a link on my page: http://www.bloglines.com/myblogs

Freedom to create

I think I finally figured out how Google Co-Op works, let me rephrase-I figured out how to get my URL's in my personal Google Co-Op. I still don't have a great sense of what I am supposed to be doing. Mine doesn't seem to work that well anyway. I need to spend more time in there but my frustrations grow. At least some of my stuff keeps growing and I think that is a good thing because we are doing other projects. i am most worried that i am going to get stuck with a C grade because i go have no idea how my progress is going, there has been no fees back at all. On another note I am half way through Free Culture and I find all of these ideas about copyright and it's link to a culture that is free really fascinating.  Creativity needs the freedom to blossom and with our laws shutting down  artists and amateurs ability  to think and play creatively it will impact our culture in a negative way.

Another day

Okay, I am completely frustrated with Windows Vista. I can't get my Scopus project into EndNoteWeb and it is driving me crazy. I feel like I am checking some things off my list of things to do but I have no idea what they are. I only hope that at the end of all of this i will have understood in hindsight what happened. My job is great! I can't say enough how pleased I am with the way things are going. I get to recommend books all day and watch as people get excited to find the books they wanted or something you have recommended to them. Its an amazing feeling! For now I am off to LAX, my son is going to Hawaii, lucky. but I got my first Audiobook, I am going o try it out on the road since I never get to read for pleasure anymore! :(

The Anarchist

I just finished The Anarchist in the Library. There were some great views on the ways the government has let the entertainment industries revise copyright laws that benefit the industry and hurt people in the ways of culture, politics, and scholarly knowledge (production of). I really liked how Siva discussed current issues dealing with the Bush administrations war and Patriot Act, Clinton's Telecommunications Act, and the Zapatistas. It reminds me of my book Hope. It is scary how most Americans don't seem to understand the problem with having government power extend into their privacy without their having to have any knowledge of it. Our country is built upon views of innocent until proven guilty, freedom of speech, and democratic rhetoric. Most people I know don't even realize the extent of power the government has and they won't care until it directly effects them because they are blinded by fear, and ultimately the "bad guy".

Out for the weekend

So today I am feeling pretty good. I can't believe that the semester is about half way over, time flies. I am actually getting excited to go to Pittsburgh and see how things are there and meet the people I have been online with. I am really fascinated with the stuff I am learning in class. Yesterday a patron came up to me and we started talking about copyright issues, journal publishers, and e-books. It was so great to discuss it with someone who was very interested and concerned. I am also very glad I chose University of Pittsburgh, my other option was San Jose State University, here in California. I have heard nothing but bad things about that school so I feel very fortunate to have picked the right masters program. This weekend I am on my way out of town for my daughter's softball tournament. We get to stay at a hotel for 3 days, yeah! But there will be no internet connection, darn ;) I guess I will have to stay up on my reading.

work at the library

My job at the library has been going very well. I was a little worried because I had never worked in a library before and was nervous that I would find i didn't like it right in the middle or end of my master's program! I actually love it, it has been so rewarding to recommend books to readers, little readers at that since I work in the children's section. They get so excited to find a great book on just what they want, I feel really good about being a part of it. Our summer reading program starts next week so we have been busy trying to put our decorations up. I have been working on some photo collages, it's also been good to use all of my old skills again. Unfortunately my hands are killing me but luckily I know this is just temporary work, the setting up I mean. My son is also going to be an SRP volunteer so he will be able to be at work with me this summer, it should be great!

Holding on

So I am finished writing my paper for LIS 2000 and I felt really good until I saw the list of things I need to do this week! I really don't know how it is possible to do all the readings they are giving us. I am starting to feel as though I am slipping behind, or rather just barely holding on. I am frustrated with trying to get my connotea tags imported into my EndNoteWeb  account. Every minute trying to figure it out just  makes me more anxious for all the other work that needs to be done. By the time I get done with all of my readings and writings for LIS 2000 I feel as though I just can't talk about all of those topics anymore when I come here. This is beginning to become just a rant blog, which really bothers me, but if I have to squeeze anymore intelligent thoughts out of my head for this blog I feel as though I will burst. I will say that 2 of my upcoming books, out of the 4 I have to read, for the next book report are online. This is going to be really frustrating. I might just buy them because I don't think I could bear taking any more notes.

Books read, paper lagging

I have finished all of my books for LIS 2000, well the three for the book report anyway. I am glad to have them all outlined but I am just struggling to get started on my actual paper. I think I need to make sure I do all three of my postings before Friday night because I am just dragging! What can I say, loved the books. Almost done with endnote Web assignment but I can't figure out how to import Connotea references. I am so tired!! I will write a longer entry next time, for now I am shutting down my brain so i can get up at 6 am to start the paper. But I will say I love Scribefire now that i am using it. It is sooo much easier!

Access to Information

So I finished The Access Principle, it was really insightful. The future of shared communities providing access to information both locally and globally is comforting and amazing. When I was getting my BA in Communication I think I got really depressed for awhile thinking about how awful things are for some people, how corrupt the government can be, and feeling as though most Americans could give a shit. For some reason now that I am in Grad school I feel like there really is hope. Every time these books mention the problems of today I see that there is hope because we are talking about them. I don't know if it's a change in attitude for me or if I now feel that I am going to be part of solving these things. Willinsky talks about knowledge not having to be something that people have to earn but is "grounded in the basic right to know" This is exactly how I feel. This is why I wanted to become a librarian, I believe that people have the right to know-- no matter what other resources they are denied in life, we have an obligation to give them free access to information.

Techno woes

Feeling frustrated again! It is hard to keep up with exactly where I am supposed to find all of my assignments. They seem to be in a million different places and I waste loads of time trying to find out exactly what I am supposed to be doing and then where and how to accomplish these things. i just realized I am supposed to be using Scribefire, this is my first post, so hopefully I will figure out the rest and pass these courses. I tried to get to endnoteweb, and haven't been succesful--I am leaving now to figure that out.

Open Net

Watching the video on the Open Net Initiative really opened my eyes to things happening with the web I had never given much thought to. Having children I have only thought as filtering being a good thing. Now knowing that many countries are censoring information such as human rights or ideology they don't agree with I certainly have a problem with this. In America we need to become more aware of the fear factor and become active in ensuring that our rights are not taken away or monitored. It's scary how quickly a government formed on freedoms' will slowly have them chipped away at in order "to preserve freedom". 9/11 scared a lot of Americans into letting the bureaucrats poke into our personal affairs and the last thing we want is to be monitored 24/7.

Breathe

The week has certainly gotten away from me! I volunteered to do the first group project in LIS 2000 so that I could get it done with but it threw me for a loop. First, my library job has been going great although a part of me feels like a lot of my time is being wasted because there is so much down time, I could be studying and reading! I know that I need to be there and I will learn what I can't from the classroom it's just that part of me feels so impatient. Really, I should just enjoy my time there--it is the most peaceful place that I go to. Anyway, group project went well except I feel like a moron. I was a straight A student for my B.A. , always leading my groups and keeping us on task. But NOW, I have realized I am in a masters program with a bunch of overachievers!! Part of me is really annoyed--they are annoying---yes that means I must be annoying too. Please can we just Breathe...........

Double Fold

When I first started into "Double Fold" I have to admit I thought big deal they are throwing away old magazines and newspapers, you can't keep them forever. Now remember, I am someone who hates clutter and keeping unnecessary items around. An anti-clutter bug if you will. Upon finishing the book I have to say the author turned me around. I am actually shocked that all the information and knowledge on microfilm is deteriorating and that we don't have a centralized hub of original works. What a shame that so much is lost. Being a book reader I certainly do not want to get rid of paper books, though I feel guilty as to the cost of our forests around the world. I strongly believe in recycling and can't see why books can't be made from recycled paper. Further reading in "Digital Libraries" has made me wonder how technology is going to interfere or contribute to my personal reading experience--because let's all face it we want to know how it will affect us personally. I was thinking it would be great to have some sort of digital binder in which we could download the books that we wanted and could read it from a book-like binder. I still like flipping pages but I bet they could come up with something where you hit a button and it flips for you. There could be many different sizes and you could adjust the font for preference. Anyway, I keep envisioning this and how it will satisfy my guilt in killing trees.

The Commons

I just finished the article, Information Commons, and I really liked it. I am shocked over the publishers rights to control scholarly journals, especially now that digital formats are decreasing libraries terms of uses. It is common to hear about file sharing and I have artists in high places ;) that insist it is stealing, but after listening to Joi Ito and his descriptions of artists in China I can see another view. Information should be accessible to all but with the Telecommunications Act and DRM our rights are being infringed upon. Well these pieces certainly gave me food for thought but I think I need to stew a little more about them.

Kuhn is dead, I hope at least....

Just when I was feeling okay about my course work I log on today and feel it all over again! I have signed up on Google reader, which I know it gives me news but I have no idea how this has tied into my web blogging. Well, at least my Kuhn writing is done, hurray! That felt good but I am holding my breath till I get my first grade. I still feel really confused because the organization of this program doesn't seem to be that great. I feel like I have to look in 50 different places to figure out what I need to do and even then I feel like I don't fully understand the assignments. Well I need to figure out the rest of my work so ta ta for now.

Frazzled

Well my first week is over in my FastTrack program and I am feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and frustrated! I feel that I spend so much time on Blackboard trying to figure out everything I have to do (every time I look there, they have given us new assignments) that I am wasting time from reading, studying, or researching for my projects. On top of all of that I am reading Kuhn, zzzzzzzz, I have always enjoyed reading all of my articles and books from class but Kuhn--there are no words to express how dry it is. Now I guess I have to find articles on his book so I can try to write 500 words about my feelings for his thesis. Reality of my situation is hitting and I realize that something in my life has gotta give because I don't know how I am going to do it.

Onto other news, I just got my very first job in a library. I am so excited because it is exactly where I wanted to be, on the flip side I am freaking out about how I am now going to add this job to my schedule and still accomplish getting my masters.

Signing off, because really I have about 10 assignments I need to do

Virgin Blogger

Though I have loads of experience in computers, I have never blogged! I feel inadequate some how, anyway I am sure that on my way out of my Master's program I will feel greatly accomplished at how far I've come, at least I hope so..............
